Framed and matted bust portrait of Mr. Benjamin Preston Clark (1860-1939), Vice President of Plymouth Cordage Company at the turn of the 20th century, by Albert Sterner (1863-1946). Benjamin Preston Clark was born October 6, 1860 in Boston, MA. He studied natural sciences and entomology from Amherst College between 1877 and 1881, but was forced to abandon his academic career and enter the business world after the failure of his father’s business, B.C. Clark & Co. Clark became Vice President, and possibly President later on, of Plymouth Cordage Company in Plymouth, MA. Portrait outline done in charcoal, shading in orange pastel, and highlights in white chalk on dark brown Kraft paper. Signed in lower left corner “Albert Sterner / 1906”. Overall: 37 x 28 1/2 in., framed; 26 x 19, sight.
