An unusual hand-colored photograph of the wreck of the MORRO CASTLE after it grounded at Asbury Park, New Jersey. Eyewitnesses describe how the ship was still glowing red and smoking after it came to rest at the Asbury Park beach late in the day after the disaster, but the black and white news photographs do not capture this; here, the artist has added color to convey that effect. They seems to have used two different kinds of color-- first, colored pencils or pastels for the light washes of blue and red tint, and secondly a black that is shinier and less transparent, perhaps simply a graphite pencil. The signature at the bottom right says "L. Young 1934."
