A menu from the second class dining room on the MAURETANIA from September 18, 1929. The cover art shows a woman surrounded by flowers, with shiny gold highlighting it. This was a moment of change for the MAURETANIA-- two months before, it had lost its title as the fastest ship in the world when a German ship, the BREMEN, beat its 22 year old transatlantic speed record. And if this otherwise standard menu seems to have a bit of a Caribbean flavor to it-- with chicken gumbo, guava jelly, and plums creole making an appearance and perhaps a hint in the cover art as well-- it might reflect the announcement on this very day in 1929 that the MAURETANIA would soon begin making trips from New York to Havana.
