A dinner ("Mittagessen") menu from the liner PRINZ FRIEDRICH WILHELM from the day the TITANIC sank, April 15, 1912. This ship of the North German Lloyd Line was one of the ships in the vicinity of the TITANIC when it sank and received its distress signals. The menu is a lavish and luxurious one, with everything from stuffed turkey to pate of snipe. The menu is in both English and German. The front cover has a colorful fairytale painting with the caption "Am Brunnen vor dem Tore," which is the title of a German song that means "By the Well Before the Gates." It is a sad and dreamlike song, about lost love and a linden tree by a well, written by Franz Schubert but which is widely known in Germany and considered a folk song. The back cover has the musical score for the song at the top. Beneath it is a concert program for that day, with a mix of music from opera overtures to Irving Berlin's 1911 ragtime song, "Alexander's Ragtime Band."
