Cased model of the whaleship KATHLEEN, purchased in Provincetown, MA, in 1931 from an unknown maker or seller; model maker unknown. Model built from wood and rigged with small metal chaining and cotton thread, no sails. Six whaleboats onboard; two on the deck, four suspended from davits off the deck. Model and whaleboats fully painted; 'KATHLEEN' painted on either side of the bow under the anchors. Model mounted on two metal pedestals, raised roughly 1 inch off the felt baseboard. Case made from glass and stained wood framing; information plate on front reads 'Model of "Kathleen" New Bedford whaler. / One of three boats out of New Bedford which were sunk by a whale. Bought by Van S. and K. F. Merle-Smith, Provincetown, Mass. 1931'. Overall good condition. Overall: 35 1/8 x 15 x 45 7/8 in.
