A passenger list from the August 28, 1930 voyage of the TUSCANIA from Southampton to New York via Havre. This is a list of the passengers in Tourist Third Cabin class. As immigration dropped off and middle class travel increased, Cunard shifted its third class from traditional immigrant steerage to welcoming budget travelers. The New York immigration records for this voyage show that many of the passengers on this list were teachers and students, along with clerks and other middle-class people. This voyage was notable, though, for 110 mile per hour winds the ship encountered due to a hurricane. According to newspaper reports, "the hurricane sprang up very suddenly, tables and chairs were flung about the decks, women screamed hysterically, and several climbed on the lifeboats and sang "Nearer, my God, to thee." One passenger on this list, an art student named Laura Mat Lehman, broke her arm when she was thrown down a set of steps, and four others were more lightly injured. In addition to the passenger list, this booklet includes a list of the officers, a description of the U.S. head tax in effect at this time, a description of upcoming winter cruises, and a pull-out map showing the route the ship took at different times of year. Inside the front cover is a handwritten list of three passengers' addresses. The front cover has a gilt drawing of a sailing ship on blue seas, with a gilt frame around it.
