Luncheon menu dated September 2, 1957 from the QUEEN MARY. The front cover has a painting by artist John R. Townsend which is identified on the back cover as a view of Cunard's Cove in Ovens National Park, Nova Scotia. As a caption on the back explains, this was the site of a small gold rush in 1861-62 when placer gold deposits eroding out of bedrock were found in the sand of the beaches. William Cunard, the son of Cunard Line founder Samuel Cunard, bought up many of the most productive claims and removed sand from the beach in large quantities by ship for processing in England, while other hopeful prospectors panning by hand on small claims had little luck.
