A beautifully illustrated February 20, 1912 Shrove Tuesday concert program from the CARPATHIA, with floral decorations on both front and back. The performers were all members of the crew, and Captain Arthur Rostron was in attendance. Edward Henry Hughes, singing a baritone aria and songs, was the Chief Steward. Douglas Hamilton Colquhoun, performing humorous songs, was the 7th Engineer. "Mr. J. Barker" may be James William Barker, Assistant Storekeeper. Three of the performers were members of the ship's band, including 22 year old bandmaster Edgar Heap, 25 year old pianist William "Theo" Brailey and 23 year old cellist Roger Bricoux. They had two performances together in this concert, both classical chamber music pieces. A few days after this concert, we know that Bricoux, new to this job, sent his parents a letter from Trieste gushing about how splendid the voyage was. A month and a half later, Brailey and Bricoux transferred to the world's newest and biggest ship, the TITANIC, and they were part of the ship's band that famously played until the ship sank. Both of them died, and it was the CARPATHIA that came to the rescue and first learned of the ship's sinking.
