Program for an "Entertainment in aid of the Liverpool Seamen's Orphanage," held on the CARPATHIA on July 11, 1913. The ship orchestra was involved, playing a Sousa overture to start the concert, but at least some of the other performers were passengers. Our collection includes a passenger list for this voyage, item #2020.39.7603, and several of the performers' names also appear there. In addition to various classical and popular songs, the program includes a recitation and also a dance performance by "Miss. G. Elliott's Marvellous Troupe." The front cover has a red and blue art nouveau style drawing by artist E.A. Walker, while the back has a drawing of the Seamen's Orphan Institution and information about it. Among other things, it notes that "in thirty-nine years following the establishment of this Orphanage, no less than 151,366 seamen died in English ships aboard, of whom 98,640 were drowned." In the year 1910, the orphanage provided benefits to 1,297 children.
