A World War I postcard with naval ships and the caption "Rule, Britannia, Britannia rules the waves,/ Britons never, never, never shall be slaves." There is a helmeted Britannia figure with a Union Jack shield in one corner. The card was sent from Liverpool on July 2, 1915 and is addressed to Mrs. A. Bedrossian, 162 W. Sixth Street, So Boston Mass, U.S. of America. The message on the back says "This is the flag of the Mother Country but I would not give one star out of the American flag for the whole British Empire, some how or other the good old USA seems the best of the lot. Joe." Joseph Miller was a seaman, possibly still aboard the CARPATHIA at this time, and this is part of a series of cards he sent to Marie Bedrossian. This was sent on the same date as another card, 2020.39.7635.16, in which he is talking about his ship transporting troops to the Dardanelles, so this is clearly a moment when World War I was intensifying for him as an American crew member on a British merchant marine ship.
