Tin cup belonging to Herbert F. Thorley from Guadalcanal with Japanese characters scratched onto the base of the cup. Paper tag attached to handle, reads: “Japanese Army Cup / From / Guadalcanal WW? / Japanese / See scratched name on bottom”. Reverse reads: “Uncle Herbie was / a mule skinner / in US Army F.A. / His Crop”; in reference to leather whip 2022.58.3, was previously tied around the handle of tin cup 2022.58.2. Japanese characters possibly translate to the name “Kiyoshi Kurita”. Thorley served in the marines during World War II; fought and survived the Battle of Guadalcanal. Overall fair condition; dented and scratched overall, dirty. Overall: 2 1/2 x 4 7/8 x 3 7/8 in.
