POSTCARDS
Rembrandt; Browne, Francis M. (Father)
paper
overall: 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.

Eleanor Shuman survived the TITANIC disaster as an 18 month old baby. She was born in Illinois to a Swedish immigrant family. Her mother had taken her and her brother to Finland to see Eleanor's dying grandfather, and they were Third Class passengers on TITANIC on their way back. All three survived the sinking. Father Francis M. Browne was an Irishman studying for the priesthood. His uncle had bought him a ticket to travel from Southampton, England to Queenstown, Ireland. He boarded the TITANIC on April 10, leaving at noon, and disembarked the next day in Queenstown. He brought his camera and took many photographs of the ship and of people aboard, including the last photographs ever taken of Captain Smith and several other crew members. Unlike some other photographs that show the ship's ornate empty spaces, Father Browne's photographs show the ship busy and full of passengers. Father Browne was ordained in 1915 and went on to serve as chaplain in WWI, where he was injured in a gas attack.
