8x10 albumen print made in 1883. Image of NORTHERN LIGHT as a whaling bark, undersail showing a broadside view. NORTHERN LIGHT was a 125'4" whaling ship (later a bark) built in 1851 in Rochester, Massachusetts. She was originally ship-rigged with two decks and three masts and an eagle head She sailed out of New Bedford, Massachusetts. By the 1890's she was sailing out of San Francisco. Her shipmaster was James A. Hamilton from 1882-1883 on the voyage to the North Pacific whaling grounds. She was dismasted during a storm and arrived at Yokahama, Japan, April 10th, 1883 with four rowing boats at her stern. CREDIT LINE: Mystic Seaport, General Collection.
