Silver print of monument at Fort Griswald in Groton, CT, circa 1923; typed in blue below the photo "This is a picture of a monument at Fort Gris-/ wold, in honor of a group of farmers who were/ killed by a detachment of British soldiers/ during the American Revolution. It was erect-/ed in 1833. Is made of gray granite. There/ is a circular stair way to the top where you/ see the window./ The window is 135 feet from/ the ground. It seems taht a group of Americans were forced to surrender to the British./ When the American commander surrendered his/ sword to the British commander, he (the Brit-/ish Com.) ran the Americans sword thru him/ and then massacred the rest. Only one or/ two got away. I went to the top to take some/ pictures. You pay 10 cents to go up. This is for the benefit of the D.A.R. I had a nick-/el and a $5 bill which she couldn't break so/ I got up for a nickel."
