Dry card compass in box (A), with sliding lid (B); spun brass kettle drum-shaped bowl; printed 64 point card, fleur-de-lys North, printed around center "ROBT. MERRILL & SONS,/ NEW-YORK."; bowl attached to metal gimbal ring that is suspended in wood box; box is dovetailed, with sliding lid. Compass owned by Hiram Akerly (6/11/1859-3/26/1955), Akerly owned factory in Brooklyn, NY, that made automatic fire doors; spent summers in Centerport, Long Island; used compass on his boat.
