Octant, bronze frame, brass reinforced index arm, ivory scale graduated -2 deg. to 117 deg. by 1 deg. subdivided to 10', index arm w/swinging compound magnifier (separate, probably not original), vernier scale reading to 20", tangent screw, adjustable index mirror w/3 fixed shades, horizon glass w/3 fixed shades, adjustable sight vane w/swivel peep & threads for telescope, engraved in bronze part of scale "Gray & Keen.Strand Lpool."; dated 1847-1855; fixed wooden handle. In wood keystone box, lid split, label in lid of box printed "F. W. LINCOLN JR. & CO./ NAUTICAL INSTRUMENT/ MAKERS/ No. 126 Commercial St,/ BOSTON...." Box dimensions: 10 7/8" x 11 1/4" x 3 3/4" x 4 5/8".
