Ebony and brass octant, "E. M. Hazard" (owner's name) on ivory inset; same name on bottom half of the transport case; a brig in black and white is painted on inside cover; on outside cover, under Masonic square, a bird on a branch with banner in its mouth on which "E. Hazard" is carved; case painted black; bird in dull gold. This instrument was very likely made one of the Roux family of Marseilles, France, and can be dated 1770-1780. The graduation runs 0°-90° and v.v.
