Ebony and brass octant in a painted oak stepped case. , ca 1820. Made by Holliwell, Liverpool, (engraved at the bottom of the index arm), William Holliwell (w. 1795-1827); ivory inlaid scale; ivory maker's plate marked: H. DUREN NEW-YORK [the retailer], but instrument lacks pencil and ivory plate from reverse. Stamped in the scale ‘foul anchor’, without initials (between 45°-50°). Label inside cover reads: From H. DUREN, / Dealer in Nautical Instruments, No. 20 Burling Slip,/ Opposite Fulton Ferry, / ... NEW - YORK./ ... Case: 14 1/4" longer side x 4 7/17" high.
