Octant, ebony frame, ivory name plate on brace marked "Parnell Maker London"; scale inlaid ivory graduated -2 deg. to +99 deg. by 1 deg. subdivided by 20'; flat bronze index arm, ivory vernier; adjustable index mirror, 3 removable shades; horizon glass, lever adjustment & shades from index mirror; sight vane, single peep, back sight, double peep & pivoted cover, back horizon w/lever adjustment; ivory note plate missing from back, pencil hole in brace, pencil missing; 3 brass feet. In stepped keystone box, inside box "I SMITH" burned 3 times. Handwritten note on paper inside ". . . It was my father's/ June 14 - 1918/ (Sarah F. Smith)/ (her husband Isaac Smith)/ her father/ Isaac Green/ original owner/ used on whaling voyages". Given in name of Silas David Molyneaux.
