Octant with hinged, stepped wooden case (2004.28.2). Mahogany frame octant with brass features. Etched ivory scale is marked from -5 degrees to +95 degrees, graduated in 20 minute incerments; vernier reading to one minute. Ivory inlaid owner's plate reads "Alexander Hyde / 1773." Paper trade card is fixed to the interior of the associated box advertising "JOHN LEVERTON (w. 1761-87) / MATHEMATICAL, OPTICAL, AND PHILOSPHICAL / INSTRUMENT MAKER FROM LONDON / AT THE HADLEY'S QUADRANT / IN POOL-LANE LIVERPOOL."
