Octant, English, ebony frame, inlaid ivory nameplate engraved "Crichton London/ Made for Alder & Duren New York", ivory scale graduated -2'40" to +104'40" subdivided to 20', brass index arm, ivory vernier & brass tangent & locking screws. Fixed index mirror & adjustable horizon mirror each have 3 shades. Brass sight vane has double peep, pivot cover. 3 brass legs, pencil hole, no pencil. Ivory plate on back of frame scratched. Rectangular clear lens included in case. Latched, stepped keystone wood case, painted black; paper labels on underside of cover. One partial label has eagle with banner "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and sailing vessel; another label: ESTABLISHED 1816/ W. H. DODGE,/ WITH/ ROBERT KING[?],/ Nautical Instrument Maker,/ ... New York/ ..."; another label "DeMory Gray & Co.,/ .../ New York/ ..."; pencil scribbles on inside of lid
