Octant with ebony frame, ivory nameplate marked, "* BROWN * BRISTOL", probably Benjamin Brown (w.1792-1831), dated 1830-31. Ebony limb. Ivory scale marked, "(foul anchor)", graduated -3 degrees to 98 degrees by 1 degree subdivided to 20'. Flat brass index arm. Ivory vernier. Adjustable index mirror with 3 fixed shades. Horizon glass with thumb screw and lever adjustment. Sight vane double peep. Note plate on back of frame missing; pencil hole in brace. Benj. Brown, 7 Quay, Bristol, England. Provenance: Capt.
