Sextant, circa 1900 (and case)

sextant and case

INSTRUMENTS - SEXTANTS
England, London
circa 1900
radius 7-1/2 in.; case 10-1/8 x 4-7/8 in.

Brass sextant in a mahogany box-jointed keystone case with brass fittings. Sextant has a silver inlaid scale under which is engraved: Ramsden. London. Instrument lacks two legs. Case: 10 1/8" longer side x 4 7/8" high. [Ref: Willem Morzer Bruyns, July 2006: This instrument dates from around 1900. It is certainly not associated with Jesse Ramsden from the late 18th century. Perhaps a forgery, or some owner who fancied a famous name on his sextant.]
