Brass taffrail log made by Edward Massey, 4 vanes, sliding register dial cover engraved "EDWD MASSEY'S/ New LLL Patent/ FRICTIONLESS LOG". Length of line w/ bronze thimble attached to swiveling tip of log. Black painted brass reinforcing band loose. Face of register white w/3 recording dials, marked "NEW PATENT/ FRICTIONLESS/ IMPROVED LLL/ EDWD MASSEY/ PATENTEE". In rectangular wooden storage box w/paper label under lid: "EDWARD MASSEY'S/ By Special Appointment - Maker to the Royal Navy/ NEW PATENT/ FRICTIONLESS LOG./ ..." Keyed sketch of log, & directions for use also on label.
