Unframed watercolor and gouache of brig MALAY (bu. 1818, Salem, MA) by Peter Mazzinghi, Italian. Broadside w/sails furled at anchor. Black hull, fake gunports. False gunports were used on ships in wartime, on slavers, and when piracy was a threat. Even later they were rarely painted out. Mtns. & lighthouse (right) in background.
