Binnacle from the yacht COLUMBIA. Zinc covering. Fancy carving around base in diamond shapes, with rope design below. 1899-1901. Captain Charlie Barr spent two campaigns in front of COLUMBIA's binnacle. He had been recruited by Herreshoff and Iselin in 1899, to make a team unbeatable in the next three campaigns. Barr's organization was so thorough that all he needed was to look to the first mate, who would then come over for instruction. Barr's boats were very quiet.
