Straw hat with narrow upturned brim, has wooden cross inside the top of the crown as a stiffener. Entire outside of hat is waterproofed with black tar or pitch. Narrow ribbon band around crown with bow in the back. Belonged to Richard Henry Dana (1815-1882), author of "Two Years Before the Mast". Hand sewn.
