Framed gouache of harbor scene, Whampoa, China, c. 1850, attributed to Youqua; At Whampoa Anchorage, cargos for Canton were loaded onto small Chinese vessels and transported 10 miles up Pearl River to Canton. Crews remained on board the foreign vessels at Whampoa while ships' captains and supercargos conducted business with Chinese merchants. Ref: Carl L.
