Gold medal, circular with 2-ply gold rope around edge, gold anchor and chain attached with 2 rings at top. Engraved on one side of medal "PRESENTED/ by the/ MERCHANTS & CITIZENS/ NEW YORK/ to/ Andrew Cartz./ First mate of the/ AMERICAN BARQUE KILBY,/ as a testamonial of the high sense/ of his perserverance and devotion/ in rescuing part of the/ passengers and crew of the/ U.S. Steamship San Francisco,/ wrecked in the gale of the/ 24th December,/ 1853." On other side engraved scene of the wreck. Medal in black case with hinged lid. Box 4-5/8"x3-1/2"x5/8".
