Carved shell brought from Egypt by Capt. George Dunn Gilderdale (master of whaling bark PERU), c. 1855-1860; second of pair of small carved shells; "S. GIOVANNBAT" (St. John the Baptist) upper left side, in center standing female figure holding candle in right hand, book in left; head of another figure lower left. Provenance: Capt. Gilderdale to his daughter Lizzie E. Miner (Mrs. Frank Miner) to their daughter Elizabeth Hooper Miner to her brother Dr. Donald Miner, October 1926. See 1960.1-3.
