Engraving of a burial monument, reads beneath image: "The Hero whose remains are here deposited with his expiring breath expressed his devotion/ to his Country neither the fury of the Battle, the anguish of a mortal wound nor the horrors/ of approaching death, could subdue his gallant spirit, his dying words were "Don't/ Give up The Ship.", and "DRAWN & ENGRAVED BY C. P. HARRISON."; inscription on monument itself reads "IN / MEMORY OF / Capt. J. S. LAWRENCE / OF THE / U. STATES NAVY / WHO FELL ON THE / [illeg] TH OF JUNE 1813 / IN THE 32ND YEAR / [illeg] HIS AGE."; small headstones surround the larger monument; present (2018) memorial is at Trinty Churchyard, New York City.
