Astor Cup trophy, silver vase with 2 handles, eagle heads on top, female figure standing on neck, relief design of shells, serpents, waves, leaves, egg, dart & floral design around base. Engraved on two sides "ASTOR CUP/ WON BY/ DEFENDER/ FROM/ VIGILANT/ IN TRIAL RACES FOR/ AMERICA'S CUP/ OFF SANDY HOOK/ AUGUST, 1895." Stamped on base "5367" (boxed), "14 PINTS/ STERLING", crescent moon & 3 hallmarks. DEFENDER launched 6/29/1895, Herreshoff Mfg. Co., Bristol, RI; built of aluminum, bronze & steel. Crew made up of men from Deer Isle, ME, & was first wholly American crew of any Cup defender; rebuilt in 1899, but broken up 2 yrs. later due to rapid corrosion of hull.
