Oil painting; ship SEA SERPENT, painted c. 1850. Port broadside view, on port tack and under full sail. Black hull, red bottoms. Land and pilot schooner in distance at left. At bottom center: "Sea Serpent Passing South Head, San Francisco"; lighthouse on hill. Vessel owned by Grinnell and Minturn of NY, sailed the Cape Horn route to California and China until sold to Norway in 1874.
