Painting, oil on fine canvas, Chinese school, portrait of Clara Manter Benson (1870-1940), daughter of Timothy Manter Benson & Rebecca Sears Benson. Oval portrait in Western style, c. 1880 (see matching portrait 85.103.3). Subject seated w/arms folded on table, wearing a blue dress w/lace collar and a red hair ribbon. Blue-gray background & drapery. May have been painted from life, as Clara & her mother accompanied Capt. Benson on some of his China voyages aboard bark MARTHA DAVIS. In oval mahogany frame [1985.103.12] w/gilt liner.
