Model of steam tugboat SOCONY IV built to 1/4 inch scale by John Salzig and Eric Schade of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 1982. Model features solid wood hull, sheet- and strip-wood superstructure, and commercial brass fittings. Interior detailing includes crew lounge, engine room, boiler, and wheelhouse. Red bottom, gray hull with yellow sheer stripe, red superstructure with gray and white trim, green towing bitts, natural main deck, black funnel, propellor, and ventilators. White lifeboat with gray boatcover atop clerestory roof structure. Model is mounted with brass bar stock to 19-1/2" x 6" hardwood base. Built from plans in Mystic Seaport collection. SOCONY IV (ex-S.T. CO. NO. 4, ex-ROBERT S. PARSONS, ex-MAYCLIFF),steam tug designed by Cox & Stevens, blt 1914 at Port Richmond, N.Y. by Staten Island Shipbuilding Co., 238 gr., 161 net, 102.3 x 26.6 x 12.7. Owned by Socony-Vacuum Oil Co. Last reg. 1955.
