Payson had SAGA built in 1935 by the Wheeler Shipyard in Brooklyn at a cost of $88,000. SAGA was ordered with twin V-12 Packard engines, producing speeds in excess of 40 m.p.h. to beat Jock Whitney's 1928 APHRODITE on their runs to and from Manhattan from adjoining estates on Manhasset Bay, New York.
