4 x 5 glass plate negative, by Benjamin H. Shoemaker II. Taken in Newport, RI, pre-1900. Starboard view of the battleship MAINE at anchor. Handwritten on original envelope in pen: "Maine" and in pencil: "12 sec/ f 4.5/ #1". The United States battleship MAINE was built in 1888 at Quintard Iron Works in Brooklyn, NY. She was designed by Theodore Wilson and sunk on February 2, 1898 in Havana. She was later refloated.
