6 x 8 glass plate negative photographed by Morris Rosenfeld in 1914. Image of 118' Burgess & Morgan designed and George Lawley & Son Corp. built cutter VANITIE (built 1914 in South Boston, Mass.) at 1914 America's Cup. Visible in image: port beam view of the cutter VANITIE on starboard close reach with gaff-rigged mainsail, topsail, staysail, jib and flying jib raised, silhouetted against sun, but processed to give impression of a moonlit scene, land in background. The glass plate is Wratten and Wainwright panchromatic emulsion. VANITIE tried unsuccessfully to qualify as a defender in America's Cup 1914 and 1920. She was one of three cutters built for the 1914 defense of the America's Cup against SHAMROCK IV, the Lipton challenger. She was the largest, structurally strongest, and most powerful of the three, and was considered by many to be superior to Herreshoff's RESOLUTE, the eventual defender. In the 1920s under staysail schooner & marconi sloop rigs, she regularly defeated RESOLUTE in races between the two. CREDIT LINE: Mystic Seaport, Rosenfeld Collection. Typed on original negative sleeve: "1357-S / VANITIE / Box 107". For more information see: A CENTURY UNDER SAIL, text by Stanley Z. Rosenfeld, page 37.
