8 x 10 nitrate negative taken by Rosenfeld and Sons on April 23, 1924. View of the dining room aboard the United States Lines' passenger ship REPUBLIC, launched as SERVIAN in 1903. "Travelers in first-class might feel they were at home when they entered the Republic�s dining room. Upholstered chairs, flowers, and classical woodwork gave the feeling of being in a club or elegant restaurant rather than in a dining hall for 380 at sea. These passengers also had use of a social hall with dance floor, a writing room, a ladies saloon, a smoking room, a gymnasium, a veranda, and glass-enclosed promenades along two decks. A reviewer noted, 'the scheme of decoration of all the public rooms is in the most excellent taste and gives an affect of light and airiness, � much more preferable � than elaborate carving and gilding.'"
