8x10 glass negative photographed by Charles Edwin Bolles in 1899 at the launching of COLUMBIA, the newest defender for the America's Cup challenge to be held that year. COLUMBIA was a 132' cutter designed by Nathanael G. Herreshoff and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island. She is seen here launched but not fitted out at the Herreshoff dock, port bow view, tethered to the dock. In the background to the right is the work shed from where she was probably launched. Handwritten neg. sleeve info.: "Y57 / COLUMBIA / Box 6". Handwritten on emulsion side on glass edge: "#1058 / COLUMBIA".
