In the background are two other yachts with white hulls. FREELANCE was a 137' steel screw steam schooner designed by A. Cary Smith and built by the Crescent Shipyard of Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1895. Her owner from ca. 1896 to 1919 was F. Augustus Schermerhorn of New York, New York. Handwritten neg. sleeve info.: "Freelance / Y119 / Box". Typed on small piece of paper caption surface edge: "588 / Freelance / June 11, 1896". Handwritten on emulsion side of neg. along edge: "copyright 96 / 588 / Freelance".
