8 x 10 glass negative photographed by James Burton ca. 1905. Image is a view of the J. Gordon Bennett Steam Yacht Cup given to encourage transatlantic racing of powered vessels. This silver cup was decorated with relief images of steam yachts crossing open waters, flanked by mermaid figures. James Gordon Bennett (b.1841-d.1918) started the Commercial Cable Company in 1883 which laid transatlantic cables between the years of 1884-1923. He was also an owner at one time of the 'New York Herald' newspaper. Handwritten on original negative sleeve: "395 - J. G. Bennett's S. Y. Cup" / Box 21.
