At the President's Cup Regatta in Washington in Sept. 1940, this vessel won the John Charles Thomas Trophy and the A.P.B.A. Championship, winning all five heats in the two race series. Note, the Yachting article describing these race series (Nov. 1940, p.78) shows a photo of VIPER without III after the name and describes her by VIPER without III in the text; Motor Boating (Nov. 1940) in the text and race results describes her as VIPER III.
