Large scrimshawed walrus tusk, one of pair carved by same scrimshander (1976.9). Scenes depict men with hand guns & rifles, & dogs, all fighting polar bear, a dead bear in background; deer; dog's(?) head; woman's profile, bust portrait; whaleship cutting in; whaleboats attacking whale; whaleboats sailing after whale; woman clothed in union suit, astride eagle, bearing ribbon "GOOD LUCK JEANETTE", with that vessel above it. Dates from 1879-1880. JEANETTE USN Polar Expedition vessel, crushed in ice.
