Cane with silver knob, "Dr. CHEVALIER./ No. 22/ Warren Street/ DENTIST./ Victory of Old Hickory at New Orleans Jan'y 8th 1815." Dr. Nicholas Chevalier (1785-1855) married Abby Ruth Packer, granddaughter of Eldredge Packer, Mystic shipbuilder. The cane was a gift of General Andrew Jackson, who was nicknamed "Old Hickory" by his soldiers during the War of 1812, to his personal dentist, Dr. Nicholas Chevalier. Rough wooden shaft, presumably hickory, with rawhide loop through center; brass band at bottom with rubber tip; silver band at top of shaft; bone handle resembling wooden branch; topped with engraved silver seal.
