On the day of the second America's Cup Race, October 17, 1899, in New York Harbor, SHAMROCK snapped her mainsail. This is a closeup view of the broken sail. Handwritten on linen backing at the bottom in pencil: "47 / Broken XX in 8/12 [???]" and in ink: "Shamrock."
