Bronze capstan from Herreshoff sloop COLUMBIA. Engraved in top: "HERRESHOFF MFG. CO./ BRISTOL, R.I./ No. 499/ COLUMBIA/ 1899". COLUMBIA's capstan was necessary to help handle anchor lines, and was easy to take off when it came time to break her up. It ended up in the Herreshoff yard, too good to scrap.
