He was at Camp Smith at part of the New York Naval Militia which preceded the Naval Reserves prior to WW II. From transcript in Sound Archives: "The Naval Reserve then was also Naval Militia. So Camp Smith was set up for the Naval Militia part where we went for rifle practice and so forth and so on. And I think what we did was spend 4 or 5 days there. So that’s me with a Springfield 30-0-3, learning how to knock, get your teeth knocked out when it recoiled. "
