4 x 5 inch emulsion on paper black-and-white photograph of a native village directly on the waterfront in Malaita, Solomon Islands, April 1943. Hand written on the back: "A native village south of MALAITA / Island, Solomons. Built on a coral reef. The / natives, would work on the “mainland “ in the / daytime and come back to the island at nights [sic] to keep clear of the bands of / headhunters that would come down from / the hills on raiding parties. / 4/43" This photo was sent home by Henry Strauss at that time. This is a prominent white spot in the foreground. The photo is taken from either on or across the water.
