From Henry Strauss transcript in Sound Archives: "...from the left is Carr, who was new 3rd officer, the…next to him is Quant, who was my Exec. and who eventually relieved me in command. And what they were in the process of doing is they just been surveying the coast of Malaita. He’s been taken horizontal sextant angles while we’ve been running sounding lines." Lt. Quant is holding a sextant in his left hand and speaking to Carr while Carr is writing.
